This piece was a commission for the Boston Children's Hospital, and hangs in the neuro wing by the nurses' station.
Everything depicted in this piece is native to the Boston area, including fallen American Elm leaves (the MA state tree), four tiny Seven-spotted Ladybeetles (MA state insect), three Woolly Bear caterpillars, two Persius Duskywing Butterflies (an endangered species), and one Spotted Salamander. These are all seek-and-find elements for the children to find. The piece includes Peanut Butter Fungus, lichen, Pinwheel mushrooms, mosses with sporophytes, Crowded Parchment Fungus, Turkey Tails, and more.
Making a piece of artwork for a children's neuro ward has special meaning to me. This piece was created in honor of our granddaughter Cora, who loves trees and forests, and has a rare neurodegenerative genetic disorder called Sanfilippo Syndrome (MPS IIIB).
The piece is 20" in diameter. I created the natural elements with stitched paper, paper sculpture, hand embroidery, beading, couching, eco-dyed fabric sculpture, paperclay, polymer clay and found objects.
